Lemmings are cute however they are also dumb. If you tell them to jump off an cliff, they’ll. Like the people who begin blogs because everyone else is doing it. Guess what happens after a while? The blogs cease to exist.

When I was managing a list of many Web websites, the majority of them blogs, I removed a lot of websites from my list because blogs and websites have ceased to exist. They ran out of steam or had no reason to begin these sites in the first place.

I’ve been blogging since June 2000. If you go through my earlier posts in Meryl’s notes, you’ll find that they’re much more personal. When blogs first appeared on the scene in the late ’90s they were diaries of personal nature and journals. Like the blog business my blog has evolved from personal to business-oriented, although I still add my personal thoughts here and there.

A few bloggers tend to write about their work as well as their products and small world. This is a great strategy for celebrities where fans want to know everything they know about them. However, it’s not for the average business owner. Other business people want tips on how they can succeed and if a website spends time hawking products offering information that is of no use, very few people will return. The companies that sell their products well are the ones who provide useful information. Readers already know what kind of information they’re getting therefore they know that when they purchase an item, it’s of the same or better quality. This is why they should reflect this in their blog. This is similar to people who will only sign up for a newsletter after first seeing an instance.

There is no one who wants being a lemming (I would hope). What are the steps to decide whether to or not you should set up your own blog? It’s not black or white (what did you think?). Consider these questions:

  • Do you have the ability to regularly update it — at least five times per week?
  • Have you got something to say other that just linking to other sites?
  • Do you check out other feeds or blogs?
  • Can you share information of value to others not just to yourself?
  • How large are your newsletter’s subscribers?
  • How many visitors unique to you get on an average each week, day or month?

The main factor to consider is whether or not you are able to blog nearly daily. The people behind the websites with high traffic post several times per day. While they’re resourceful, linking to other sites doesn’t give visitors much reason to to come to yours. The reading of other blogs or feeds is an excellent method of learning how to lead a discussion. Look for other blogs that cover the same subjects as yours and visit them. You don’t agree with their opinion? Write about it, and then explain your reasoning. Cross-blog discussions are common and that’s why trackbacks come in handy.

Trackback is a feature on blogs. If you choose to leave a comment on another blog posting in your blog rather than on the blog’s comments section, then you can link to the discussion via the trackback link. Trackback is similar to URL, the URL that is used for your blog’s entry however it uses another URL to copy and pasting into your site’s trackback field.

The tools used to blog for both my blogs have syndication options so users of feeders or other aggregators are able to browse the content via the software. If you are sending out a new issue of a newsletter, comment on it or link to it in the blog so that the feed reader and blog will have the same content thus ensuring that the three areas are all covered.

These tools aren’t just for blogging, but for everything else. Such tools are an excellent option to allow you to refresh your website more frequently than you normally would. I use it to manage the list of tableless web websites. Using blogging tools is much simpler than how I handled it previously updating the HTML files by hand. While using a blogging tool does not mean that it’s an actual blog. In this instance the tool used to create blogs is now a content management system (CMS).

Small business owners don’t need an need for the elaborate and pricey CMSes out there. They prefer to use blogging software to run their sites or hire a person to adapt the tool for their site.

Blogs are finding a niche in businesses and people are finding creative ways to utilize them. Certain companies have blogs on their intranet to communicate progress, jeopardies, and metrics. They’re also used to manage knowledge. With so much information flowing into the world, blogs are a a way to share organize and process the data.

Being a follower could be good or bad. No one wants to walk down a slope with lemmings. But everyone wants to be successful. Good practices will not help as the decision to blog is determined by the organisation’s mission and goals along with its audience’s expectations and desires. A blog about lemmings? There’s one, sort of. Maybe you’d like begin your own business and start talking about dumb business moves.
