4 Simple Coping Skills You Must Have For Your Mental Health

In the mental health community psychiatrists, counselors, and facilitators of group therapy regularly discuss coping strategies. Why? It’s not just because we require them to make it through the day, but as well to enable us to function better in our communities.

I’ve come up 4 essential coping strategies for those who suffer from mental health problems. They have worked for me, and I’m sure they’ve been helpful for many others too. Here’s what they’ve done:

1. Have A Support Network

Consider creating your own. One of the best things with support group is that you are able to organize group trips, pot- lucks, or dinners as you chat.

2. Find A Way To Exercise!

I know, I’m aware. Many of you might not be capable of getting out of your bed before 3pm, or even have the motivation to exercise… I get it. I was there as well. But here’s the thing. Don’t think about the traditional methods to exercise, such as the running, gym and weight training, etc… Do you have considered walking? It doesn’t have to be a vigorous walk , as the experts tell us. All you need to do is stroll! Take a walk through the neighborhood. Take a stroll around town and grab your lunch before you get up, if that’s what you want to do. It doesn’t require you to join a gym to get those uplifting chemicals flowing. That’s exactly the thing we should be focusing on first and not losing weight. For instance, the sensations last for just 30 minutes. The effort is worth it.

Why? The more often you practice it, the more endorphins and other neurochemicals are absorbed into the body. I walk three days a week in the morning, and after I’m done, I do fifteen minutes of mindfulness. It’s for me the ideal way to kick the day. This brings me to the third coping skill.

3. Mindfulness

The man referred to as The Buddha believed that the root of all suffering lies in our attempts to escape from the present moment as well as our direct perception of it. Do you believe this to be true? A study was conducted recently that focused on mindfulness meditation. It is believed to be the first study of its kind to show rapid changes in gene expression among people who practice mindfulness meditation.

According to Dr. Bruce Lipton gene activity is constantly changing. His research shows that a constant change in the perception of your mind can change the activities of your genes, resulting in over 30000 variations for each gene. Wild stuff, huh!

What does this mean to us? For those who are mentally ill, the present is subject to suffering all the time. It is possible to ask, ” how can this help me as a coping skill?” Simple. Being present and experiencing the present moment at any given moment is the ideal thing to do, but what I’ve found is that those with mental health problems like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and generalized anxiety disorders, etc… are able to endure the pain for as long before they need to get out of the present. I seek refuge on days when my symptoms are heightened. I am afflicted for a short time until I’ve settled down a little, and then I carry on with the things I’m doing. Then, I quit the moment and lay down and go to sleep. It is essential for us to escape. I’ve come to the conclusion. Spending too much time in our heads isn’t a good thing for any person.

If you sense something is coming on Try to touch it. Everything. Breathe. Release your breath. If it’s impossible to release then give it up and take a break. Do not fight with yourself anymore. Be the best friend you can be… regardless of when you suffer from mental illness. This is the only way you can find peace in the present as The Buddha is able to describe in his teachings.

4. Develop More Hobbies Than Goals

What exactly do I mean by this? A goal is an end date. When you’ve achieved it, the goal is over. It’s not a bad thing. not against having goals. They are useful for certain people however I’m not one of them. I think that I’ve attempted every goal-setting method out there, and they didn’t work for me.

Take my father for instance. He’s goal-oriented. He set out to construct a two-seat helicopter. It took him five years to build it, but he succeeded. He now is able to fly a flying machine in my parents’ backyard.

The downside to goals is that when you’ve finished then you’re looking for the next goal , and the next and the next. My father is now agitated because his goal has been completed and he’s not sure how to proceed!

Try something new in a manner. Find hobbies that are never going to ending. These are the kinds of hobbies which will only make you more and better as you the passage of time and age. Check out where it takes you. It’s funny how life works. It is possible to start doing something and then have it evolve into something completely different, but it’s still right for you.
