A Short History of FPS Computer Games

After a brief interruption in the eighties, gaming once again rose to prominence with the invention of the Nintendo Entertainment System. The system offered a few simple games, like Super Mario, Mega Man, and the renowned Final Fantasy. Even though they were basic, were, they were much better than the ones provided by the predecessors, and gaming was reignited around the globe.

It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since those days. Can you believe it’s been over ten times since the late John Carmack amazed us with his DOOM shareware? That lightning fast ‘virtual reality’ simulator that allowed you to fight the evil forces of Mars.

As we’ve moved on from the 2D age with side scrolling games things have become a little different. Games are becoming more realistic, their characters becoming increasingly intricate, and the worlds are becoming more fluid. Many things have happened and it would be impossible to cover every single one of them, so instead we’ll take a peek at the development in one of the most well-known genres that is the first-person shooter, or FPS.

The Beginning

Wolfenstein: The original First Person Shooter released by ID Software and Apogee. It was a two dimensional shooter that followed the adventures of a British agent called BJ in his pursuit to get out of Castle Wolfenstein. The demo came out in 1992. It had eight levels and one secret level which was accessible through the first floor.

Blake Stone: Intended to be an expansion of Wolfenstein but later changed to an independent shooter that had a few sequels.

Rise of the Triad: Created by Apogee to be the successor to Wolfenstein 3D, it was the first shooter to include the capability to look up and down while fighting as well as the first game to include jump pads. It also came with a pistol with unlimited ammunition which definitely satisfied the combat needs of many.

The Middle

Half Life: Gordan Freeman and his trusty crowbar blazed forward into the future using ID Software’s Quake engine , making clear that a game doesn’t require to be broken up into different levels.

Red Faction Red Faction is the first game with fully destroyable terrain, which follows the fate of oppressed miners on the red planet.


DOOM 3: DoOM’s eagerly awaited version of the DOOM original with a brand-new engine was an overall disappointment, but in its time it was an unquestionable indicator of what the future could be like. ID Software had once again showed the world that was possible.

Prey: This game was a great one with an outstanding story and was a fairly different game. Many people disliked it, but everyone is still waiting for the sequel.

Half Life 2: The long-awaited sequel to Half Life 2. Based on the engine of the source and featuring a fully-fledged campaign, which was broken down into short intervals the game took players on the ride of their lives. It is succeeded by two separate expansions, and fans are hoping to see a fourth game in this series shortly.

Red Faction 2 Red Faction 2 sequel of Red Faction which proved to be a disappointment, however, it was a necessary sequel to the series.

Far Cry: One of the first open-world shooters that had a realistic setting. It was followed by a remake and sequel on Xbox. Xbox platform.

This is only a little portion of the story of video games. There’s plenty more to learn about and in reality, it would probably take over 1,000 pages to cover each game in full detail. As of now, I’ll leave you with this sample and pray that one day you will find some missing elements.
